Based on Qt and Scintilla, Textosaurus serves as a good alternative to basic text editors, as well as more advanced ones, like Notepad++. The software has a wide range of useful features to offer, which make it a highly versatile tool. It can be quite useful for markdown, code writing and much more.

Textosaurus is free and open source and it is available for Windows and Linux. Downloading and installing the software shouldn't take more than a minute and it doesn't involve any complex settings. Also, you don't have to meet any special hardware or software requirements.

The user interface has something more to offer than the basic text editors you are used to. Besides the main text editing area, you can also find a built-in file browser and an output viewer. Of course, you can disable these panels or enable additional ones, like a markdown previewer or a search results viewer. What's more, the panels can be moved to different positions and you can also customize the interface's colors.

The integrated file browser can help you find and open text files much faster, due to the possibility of marking folders as favorites. Furthermore, the software lets you work on several texts, on separate tabs, but this is just the beginning when it comes to what you can do.

You can switch between countless encodings at a moment's notice, just by selecting one in a top menu. Also, if you intend to use Textosaurus for editing code, you can set it to various programming languages, so it will highlight your code, based on your selection. There are other UI elements you can enable, like line numbers or white space markers, which can make your work more comfortable.

If you are looking for a simple and comfortable text editor, then Textosaurus is certainly worth trying out.

Pros

The software provides you with a clean, simple and customizable user interface. It supports a broad range of encodings and programming languages. You can have it up and running in no time, on Windows or Linux.

Cons

The software doesn't come with code auto-completion capabilities.
